A few months back I wrote about a band called Let’s Wrestle, they were a bunch of young lads from England, and if I remember correctly I went off about people sounding like the place they were from and how it layers the music with authenticity. A lot of times when I write these things I go off half cocked with some idea or issue that has been bothering me or that is my obsession for the week, but authenticity has been something I have been obsessed with since I was a teen. I guess it all started with the term poser. If you were into metal in the 80s the label poser was a sort of catch all for anyone that you deemed to be full of shit and just playing the role. Sure it was a simple way to marginalize those you deemed undesirable much like the term racist, homophobe or Jim Belushi, but I think the general tenants of the term still ring true. Perhaps even more today as we get older.

When you learn to see the world through certain lenses it makes maneuvering through it easier. Sure it can be a much more frustrating journey, but most times you can size someone up within seconds and you are less likely to be disappointed with people. I was never under the illusion that as we got older people settled into a comfortable place where they no-longer put on airs, if anything I knew it was the exact opposite. I think as our generation, a generation that has always been obsessed with cool, gets older we are splintering into two factions. One faction is a very pragmatic group that values authenticity and people grounded in the reality of the day, and a second group that is obsessed with finding their identity outside of themselves. While it isn’t the classic us versus them model of our youth, there is a definite dividing line.

I believe it was Jesus who said “Show me a man who prays in public and I will show you a charlatan”, which in its simplicity really explains what I am getting at here. I am not a religious man, if anything I am a non-believer, but that doesn’t mean I can’t give credit where credit is due. When I look at the people who are in their late 20s and 30s that still cling to the ideals of a certain scene whether it’s hip hop, punk, metal, the rave scene, or goth; and define themselves through the styles of the scene I see a fraud. When I see the people who incessantly explain how happy they are, I don’t believe them. When I see the people who cannot have a conversation with you without inserting their love of god or how they are saved, I know they are trying to convince themselves more than they are me. When you are trying to constantly convince the world that you are this that or the third you come across as less the genuine and lacking in character. Sadly this happens all too often in our modern world and that is why it is so nice to find people that are genuine.

What does this have to do with Let’s Wrestle? Not much, other than the fact that when I hear their music I believe them.
